With long-haul flights, the biggest entertainment other than all the movies and music I can stay awake for, is the in-flight meals service. There is a substantial difference between the carriers in terms of variety and quality. Another notable difference was the provision of free wine or beer on ANA flights but $7-8 on United.
ANA meal from Beijing to Haneda.
ANA provides a menu card with two options, thoughtfully created and highlighting authentic Japanese meals.
I selected the beef sukiyaki with rice and vegetables, plus sashimi, kinpira gobo and perfectly al dente soba with soba sauce.
Complementary white wine.

Beef and vegetable meal on United.
This was a passable sukiyaki, with salad, dessert bar and a slightly less than fresh bread roll.

United Club Lounge in Narita
The hubs provided me two free United Club passes for the trip. The United Club in Dulles was much smaller in size, but I enjoyed the cheese, crackers, fruit and carrots. The Narita one was much larger with lots of newspapers and magazines, plus an impressive open bar with wine, beer and cocktails.
